Aristo Sham, age 29, a native of Hong Kong, is the Gold Medal winner of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where he also took the Audience Award. It was the latest in his long list of competition successes.

He began piano lessons at the age of three with his mother and joined the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts when he was six. His studies eventually led him to the US, where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Harvard in 2019 and master’s in Music at New England Conservatory under Victor Rosenbaum in 2020. He furthered his studies at Sweden’s Ingesund School of Music with Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist before returning to the States to earn an artist diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald and Orli Shaham.  

In his early youth, he won numerous competitions in different parts of the world, including the 2011 Minnesota Junior Piano-e-competition. Notable prizes followed, such as the Vendome Prize at Verbier Festival and wins at the Gina Bachauer, Dublin, Clara Haskil, Saint-Priest and Viotti International Piano Competitions, and First Prize in the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Sham was featured in the 2009 documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies on Channel 4 (UK) and has performed for royalty, including King Charles. He has concertized across Asia, Europe, and the United States, with major highlights including the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Edo de Waart, English Chamber Orchestra under the late Sir Raymond Leppard, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, and Minnesota Orchestra. His 2025–2026 debut season as Cliburn winner included a major tour of Asia and US recitals for Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society/The Conrad, UCSB Arts and Lectures, and the Skyline Piano Artist Series at Northwestern University.

He recently recorded and hosted the complete Brahms solo piano music on RTHK4, Classical Radio in Hong Kong. His debut studio album Timeline, featuring works by Bach, Brahms, Busoni, and Grieg, was released in November 2025 by Universal Music Hong Kong.

Sham’s varied interests apart from music include travel, aviation, gastronomy, oenology, and language.
