ALEXANDER MELNIKOV

Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov trained at Moscow’s Central Music School and at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Lev Naumov. Post-graduate studies were with Elisso Virzaladze in Munich and at the International Piano Academy Lake Como in Italy. As a student, he won prizes at the Schumann Competition in Zwickau in 1989 and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1991. His extensive chamber music experience includes a well-established duo with violinist Isabelle Faust. His recordings for harmonia mundi include Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes & Fugues, which received BBC Music Magazine’s 2011 ‘Instrumental CD of the Year’ Award. Since 2002, Melnikov has taught at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Besides a busy international career in music, he maintains a passion for aviation and is a qualified private pilot.
